In April, we were thrilled to welcome a new member to the MGA team — Halle Walker, our new Event Coordinator! With a strong background in event management and a passion for building meaningful connections, Halle brings energy, creativity, and a mission-driven heart to her role. We’re excited for our MG community to reap the benefits of our growing team, and we’re deeply grateful — because none of this would be possible without the continued support of individuals like you. In this week’s Friday Feature, we invite you to get to know Halle and learn what inspired her to join MGA and what she hopes to bring to the community.
Getting to Know You
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background before joining MGA?
I'm a proud graduate of Iowa State University's renowned Event Management program—and a loyal Cyclone fan, just like our Executive Director, Allison. Before joining the MGA team, I worked as a wedding planner and coordinator in Central Iowa, Savannah, Georgia, and most recently, Kansas City. These diverse experiences helped me refine my skills in logistics, coordination, and crafting meaningful, memorable moments during some of life’s most significant celebrations.
While I loved the creativity and personal connections that came with wedding planning, I’ve always been passionate about health, wellness, and the meaningful work done by nonprofit organizations. I’m drawn to roles that allow me to make a real difference in people’s lives—which is exactly what led me to MGA. I’m excited to bring my event planning background into a mission-driven space that supports and empowers the MG community.
What drew you to the Myasthenia Gravis Association?
What drew me to the Myasthenia Gravis Association was its mission and the genuine impact it has on people's lives. I was inspired by the way MGA supports patients and their families—not just through resources and education, but by fostering a strong, compassionate community. Being part of an organization that makes such a meaningful difference really resonated with me on a personal level, and I knew I wanted to contribute to that work in a hands-on, impactful way.
What excites you most about your new role as Event Coordinator?
What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to connect directly with individuals living with MG and their families. Witnessing the meaningful, positive impact that MGA has on their lives is incredibly inspiring—and I’m truly honored to now be part of that important work.
Do you have any past experiences with event planning or working in the nonprofit space?
I graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in Event Management—one of only three programs in the country dedicated specifically to this field. During my time at Iowa State, I was actively involved in my sorority, Sigma Kappa, whose national philanthropy is the Alzheimer’s Association. Educating our Greek community, connecting with individuals and families impacted by the disease, and offering support to those affected was incredibly inspiring. It was through my involvement at Iowa State that I not only gained hands-on experience with nonprofit events but also discovered another passion: wedding planning. While completing my degree, I worked with a wedding planning company in Des Moines, Iowa, which opened the door to the industry and gave me the opportunity to work in beautiful destinations like Savannah, Georgia, and now Kansas City. Events have always been my passion, and I’m so excited to continue that journey—especially with a focus on nonprofit work—through the MGA.
Behind the Scenes
What types of events are you most looking forward to helping with at MGA?
I’m especially looking forward to helping with our Annual Meeting and Educational Seminar. This year marks the 65th anniversary, and each year brings new findings and valuable information for the MG community. It’s a truly insightful event—not only for those living with MG, but also for their families, caregivers, and anyone looking to learn more.
Are there any fun or new ideas you’re hoping to bring to future MGA events?
Right now, my main focus is on the amazing events MGA already has in place and finding ways to make them even better in the years to come. I’m excited to build on what’s already working and look for creative ways to enhance the experience for participants, families, and the community as a whole.
How do you hope your role will make an impact on the MG community?
I hope to grow in my role over the coming years to become a proud and trusted representative of the MG community. As Event Coordinator for MGA, my goal is to create meaningful, inclusive events that connect and support those living with MG, their families and support systems, as well as our generous sponsors and donors. I want to help strengthen this incredible community and ensure everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered.
