Attention: Summer Campers

Recently, the Myasthenia Gravis Association (MGA) partnered up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to hear about their summer camp program for youth. Myasthenia gravis (MG) is one of the 40+ neuromuscular diseases that fall under the service umbrella of the MDA, therefore qualifying youth with MG to participate in the the MDA summer camp.

Ashleigh Ocasio, Family Support Specialist with the MDA shared with us that summer camp is now offered as both an in person and virtual experience. Each individual can select their preference. If you select in person, there are 24 camps happening around the country on various weeks during the summer.

If an individual selects virtual, a camper pack will be sent to the home during the week of July 10th or July 17th based on the time selected. Each camper will receive a package of materials and be able to connect with other campers from across the US, virtually while participating in arts and crafts or STEM activities.

MDA summer camp is free to attendees. Those who are interested should go to www.mda.org/summer-camp and register. Attendees must be under 17 by the time the camp commences.

It’s been some 30+ (gasp!) since I attended MDA summer camp in Monticello, IA at Camp Courageous. If memory serves me right, I went to camp for 3 summers. I came home with a slew of pen pals along with memories of activities that didn’t necessarily come easy to any of us, however were adapted to bring smiles for miles. I also brought home courage to keep fighting myasthenia gravis for another day. This MDA camper alum gives camp 5 stars so go register today!

We had to dig deep into the archives to find these photos. Executive Director Allison Foss attends Camp Courageous in Monticello, IA sometime around 1991. Apparently there was a ninja turtle costume contest but details are foggy.
